Board members honor students and staff

- The School Board saluted Dr. Laura Moates Stanley of Brookwood HS on her selection by School Band and Orchestra Magazine as Georgia's representative in its 21st annual "50 Directors Who Make a Difference" report. The magazine receives hundreds of nominations each year from which the staff determines an individual from each state who has made a lasting and significant impact on students. As part of the process, nominees share their proudest teaching moments, how they hope to make a difference in students' lives, and the most important lessons they try to teach their students. In introducing Dr. Stanley, Principal Bo Ford described her as simply the best educator he has ever been around, sharing that she makes a positive difference in the lives of students and the future of our community.

- Kudos to Brookwood HS on earning National Peer Program Certification from the National Association of Peer Program Professionals (NAPPP). NAPPP helps adults establish, supervise, maintain, and evaluate peer programs so that trained peers may help each other with maximum effectiveness. The program provides students with the opportunity to develop and grow their interpersonal and leadership skills and engage with their school and community in a productive manner. Students work together on different community and school projects as they finetune their collaboration and problem-solving skills. Brookwood HS is the first Gwinnett County public school to earn certification from the NAPPP. Principal Bo Ford expressed his pride in the program, Peer Leader Instructors Dr. Boone Benton and Ashlee Linderman, and his school's peer leaders. The 63 students in Brookwood's nationally recognized program play an integral role in their school community, including welcoming new students, assisting with open house and other school events, offering peer mediation, supporting cluster schools, and training other peer leaders from other schools.

- Members of the Board of Education congratulated six Gwinnett schools and their communities on their designation as 2018-19 Title I Distinguished Schools by the Georgia Department of Education. This year's honored schools are Benefield ES, Berkeley Lake ES, Bethesda ES, Harris ES, Kanoheda ES, and Duluth MS.
