Discovery Student Ryan Lewis Places 2nd in State for August Wilson Monologue

On Friday, March 3rd, Ryan Lewis (2nd from left) participated in the State level competition of the August Wilson Monologue Competition.  He was the only Gwinnett County student to advance to the state round and he took 2nd place. Ryan will move on to the National Round held in New York later in April.

The August Wilson Monologue Competition was founded in 2007 by Kenny Leon and Todd Kreidler at Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company in Atlanta. The national program is produced in collaboration between Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters. The program is now in ten states nationwide, including Georgia ,Massachusetts, Illinois, California, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, Texas and North Carolina.


This national level competition is a free arts education program celebrating the words of the playwright August Wilson, inspiring high school students to find and express themselves through theatre.


August Wilson was an American playwright. His literary legacy is a series of ten plays, The American Century Cycle, for which he received two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama. Each is set in a different decade, depicting the comic and tragic aspects of the African-American experience in the 20th century.

North Gwinnett Middle Wins Junior Theatre Festival Outstanding Performance Award

The North Gwinnett Middle School Theatre Program was recognized at the Junior Theatre Festival this weekend with the Outstanding Performance Award. 111 Groups participated in the event. The program performed Peter Pan Jr. and was recognized on the Festival Social Media Site with:

NGMS Drama – Disney’s Peter Pan Jr: Said Cerniglia, “This presentation was amazing!!! NGMS Drama showed us beautiful singing, dancing, and acting. They really showed us what it means to be an ensemble. I was transported to Neverland!” Added McIntyre-Martinez, “MacKenzie Joy, the student choreographer, created brilliant work. The movement was clever, supported character, and gave us fun storytelling. As a whole, this ensemble of young performers embodied the magic of theatre. They are truly outstanding, talented rock stars of the future.”

Along with this award the following students received individual awards and recognition at the festival:

Central Gwinnett One Act Places 2nd in Region

The One-Act Play Cast & Crew of “A Raisin in the Sun” from Central Gwinnett High School under the Direction of Lisa Bell, Theatre Director took 2nd Place in the GHSA Region 7AAAAAAA One-Act Play Competition in October 2016.
Additional awards won for the cast & crew of ‘A Raisin in the Sun” include All-Star Cast Winners to Kenson St. Fleur and Adrien McClintock, Best Supporting Actress to AlexZandrea Taylor, and Excellence in Technical Theatre to Savannah Davis and Jessica Young.

One-Act takes 2nd at State!

The Peachtree Ridge High School One Act Play, The Romancers adapted by Jenny Newell Cook and Lorraine Thompson placed 2nd at the 2015 State One Act Championship! This is the school's fourth year competing at the state level which is a Gwinnett County record! PRHS came in first out of eight schools at the Region competition and then second at the state level.

State One Act took place at Veterans High School in Kathleen, GA on November 7th, 2015.

The Romancers was directed by Caitlin Findlay with support from fine arts chair, Dean Feldman.

Cameron Southerland ,a senior at Meadowcreek High School, won the 2014-2015 August Wilson competition. Cameron, along with 267 students from the Atlanta metropolitan area, competed for the coveted title presenting monologues from Wilson's cycle plays. He will journey to New York for his Broadway debut to compete nationally. Congrats to Cameron and the Mustang Player organization!

Duluth Middle School's Wildcat Players earned straight superiors in the annual theatre festival. In addition, Duluth MS won Overall Best Ensemble; Zachary Matthews won Best Director. Ally Welker won Best Artist. Viktor Slavov won Best Musician. Raul Sosa won Best Supporting Actor. Caitlyn Nazareth and Demi Lehman were selected as All Star Cast members and Damiete Jack and Lexie Washburn were awarded scholarships to Live Arts Theatre.
