Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Displays Grayson Elementary Art

Students from Grayson Elementary School have been selected to have their artwork on display at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s new Urgent Care location in Hamilton Mill. Joseph Jones, Cate Matthews, Riley Ayers, Charlotte Self, Graham Banks, Cameron Williams, Hope Loyd, Jazmine Hyaurth, and Lexi Vierra all have works displayed there. Brookwood Students earn National Medals in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

The National Medals in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2017 have recognized (Lto R). Paul Ashley (11th grade) with a National Gold Medal for his work entitled, City Nights and Anna Montgomery (11th grade) and Savannah Lee (11th grade) with National Silver Medals. These students have been recognized as among the most talented young artists and writers in the nation. This year, more than 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted for the annual contest. Only the top 1% were recognized at the national level.

GSMST Takes Top Honor at All State Art Symposium

On Saturday, February 25, 2017, students from all over the state competed at the All State Art Symposium hosted at Columbus State University. GSMST Senior, Allison Chan, took the top NAHS honor with winning the prestigious Helen Flemming Stone Scholarship. This is the second year in a row that GSMST and the art students under Teacher Jennifer Prince have taken this honor!

Art Educators named State Art Teachers of the Year

Two Gwinnett county art educators have recently received awards from the Georgia Art Education Association.  Bobbie Adamczyk of Norcross Elementary in Norcross, GA was named the Georgia Elementary Art Educator of the Year.  Debi West of North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, GA has been selected as the Georgia Secondary Art Educator of the Year.  These annual awards recognize outstanding GAEA members for exemplary contributions, service and achievement at the state level.  The awards will be presented at the association’s annual convention in Gainesville on October 15, 2016.


According to GAEA President Lauren Phillips, “This award recognizes a high level of professional accomplishment and service by dedicated art educators.  These art teachers exemplify the high quality of individuals involved in the field of art education today: leaders, teachers, students, and advocates who give their very best to the profession.  We are proud to recognize Bobbie Adamczyk and Debi West.”

Mill Creek High School art student wins the 10th Congressional Art Competition 2016.   Bianca Robinson, Mill Creek High School senior, won first place at the 10th Congressional Art Competition and will have her artwork Touched by Grace on display at the Capital Building in Washington DC for a full year.  Bianca will attend the opening gala this summer in Washington DC with her family.   Congratulations Bianca!

Rep. Johnson announces 2016 Congressional Arts Competition winners

Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) announced the winners of his 2015 Congressional Arts Competition and awarded four college scholarships worth a total of $35,000 on April 23 at the Lou Walker Senior Center.


First runner up was Jose Gomez, a senior from Meadowcreek High School in Gwinnett County. He won a $12,000 scholarship to The Art Institute of Atlanta for his work “Equality.” His work will be displayed in Congressman Johnson’s District office for a year.


Second runner up went to Terrell Reese, a senior from Meadowcreek, for his work “Lost Ones.” He earned a $7,500 scholarship to The Art Institute of Atlanta.

Summerour Art: First Place in Chalk Contest

On Saturday, April 30th, ten National Junior Art Honor Society members from Summerour Middle School competed in the Chalk 1 Up 4 Safety Contest at the Woodruff Arts Center.  They worked together as a team to create a chalk drawing on a section of concrete that best communicated the theme "Be More than a Bystander" for anti-bullying and tied for the FIRST PLACE prize of $500 in the middle school category! They were highly complimented by the sponsors of the contest which included Montlick and Associates, Allstate insurance, and Norfolk Southern, about how well they worked together and how beautiful their piece was.

Teacher Recognized as National Middle Level Art Teacher of the Year

The National Art Education Association has named Aimee M. Burgamy, of Lilburn, GA, to receive the 2016 National Middle Level Art Educator of the Year Award. This prestigious award, determined through a peer review of nominations, recognizes the exemplary contributions, service, and achievements of one outstanding NAEA member annually at the National level within their division. The award was presented at the NAEA National Convention in Chicago, IL, March 17-19, 2016.

NAEA President Patricia Franklin states, "This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. Aimee Burgamy exemplifies the highly qualified art educators active in education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to their students and the profession."

NAEA is the professional association for art educators. Members include elementary, secondary, middle level and high school art teachers; university and college professors; education directors who oversee education in our nation’s fine art museums, administrators and supervisors who oversee art education in school districts, state departments of education, arts councils; and teaching artists throughout the United States and many foreign countries.
