Notice to GCPS Employees in Regard to Spring Break Week, March 30-April 3, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has called for organizations and agencies across the country to take extraordinary measures to care for their people while still conducting their essential business. In our case, that essential business is teaching and learning, and I am very proud of all you have done to allow us to keep students engaged in their education from their homes.
Next week we will take a much-needed pause from that work as our scheduled Spring Break takes place on March 30-April 3. For 12-month (246-day) staff, Spring Break typically is limited to one day. This year that day is Friday, April 3. In light of recent guidance from the national and state levels advising people to “shelter in place/stay at home,” I am announcing today my decision, with the approval of the Gwinnett County Board of Education, to close all schools and district offices for the entire week of March 30. All employees will be allowed to shelter in place/stay at home without having to use leave time or conduct school district business.
There are a few exceptions to this decision. They include a limited number of employees who are needed for specific, short-term tasks, such as miscellaneous payroll processing, building maintenance, and technology retrofits. These employees will be allowed to take the equivalent number of days off at another time, working with their supervisors and division heads to determine those dates.
The Board and I are grateful for the professionalism, teamwork, and diligence you have shown as we continue these two weeks of Digital Learning Days. Information regarding plans for the week after Spring Break will be shared via email later today. We all look forward to the day when we can return to our normal work schedules and routines. In the meantime, thank you, take care of yourselves and your families, and enjoy your Spring Break.
