GCPS schools qualify to earn national award

October 22, 2018

Six Gwinnett County public schools are among a select group of 83 schools statewide eligible to apply for the National NSEA Distinguished School Award. Each year the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (NAESPA) recognizes two schools from each state receiving Title I federal funding for their outstanding achievements in education. The following schools from Gwinnett County Public Schools are eligible to apply for the award:

  • Bethesda Elementary School
  • Harris Elementary School
  • Jenkins Elementary School
  • Kanoheda Elementary School
  • Shiloh Elementary School
  • Sycamore Elementary School

“This is great news for our title I schools,” said Lynn Howard, Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Executive Director of Federal and Special Programs. “Back in 2015 we had four schools to be recognized as Highest Performing schools, we were excited about that but to have six is great. Harris Elementary School has been recognized for five consecutive years as Highest Performing. It is evident that these schools have high expectations for all students and are focused on academic achievement looking beyond barriers and challenges that come with serving high numbers of economically disadvantaged students.”

The two schools selected to represent Georgia will be announced next month. The winners receive a monetary award of $20,000 from the Georgia Department of Education’s (GaDOE) Title I Program. The six GCPS schools qualified to apply for the prestigious award based upon ranking in the top 5% on the single 2017 CCRPI score. The GaDOE will select the winning schools based on that CCRPI score and demonstrated excellence in serving special populations of students, e.g. homeless, migrant, English learners, etc…

The winning schools will travel to the National ESEA Conference in Kansas City, MO (January 30 - February 2, 2019) where they will be recognized at a special award ceremony of all NAESPA FY19 National ESEA Distinguished Schools from across the nation.
