Alex Robson, a teacher at GIVE Center West in Norcross, has been named 2018-19 Georgia Alternative Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Association of Alternative Education. The distinction is awarded to a teacher who:
- is an exceptional, dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled teacher;
- inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn; and
- plays an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school.
Robson was honored for his dedication to teaching and learning and to changing the lives of the most vulnerable students. He teaches at the GIVE Center which is a unique institution that offers academic opportunity to students whose behaviors have precluded them from attending the traditional school. In addition to awarding academic credit, the staff at GIVE West works diligently to identify and address the individual deficiencies of each student. The ultimate goal of the GIVE Center is to provide each student with the tools and skills needed to transition seamlessly back to the home school in better academic and behavioral standing than when the student arrived at GIVE West.
Mr. Robson, who was a 2016-17 Finalist for Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year, says he is humbled by the news of this latest honor. He adds, “I am honored to shine a light on the GIVE Centers in Gwinnett County and the important and powerful effect they have on students’ lives every day. Alternative Education is a vital part of our school system and helps our students who need it most.”
