Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and Atlanta Community Food Bank partner to serve up books and snacks

July 17, 2018

This summer, Gwinnett County Public Schools and the Atlanta Community Food Bank are serving up summer success and a hunger for reading… all delivered by a converted school bus! Two mobile libraries travel 35-stop routes in the Meadowcreek and Norcross clusters each week, checking out school library books to students who may not have easy access to the public library. The two Book Mobiles are stocked with books for all ages and reading levels— Pre-K to 12th grade— pulled from the shelves of school media centers. The buses have been running their weekly schedule (Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.) since June 4, with the program wrapping up Friday, July 27.

New this summer, GCPS partnered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and its partner One-to-One to Atlanta Community Food Bankprovide meals/snacks to Book Mobile patrons—children along with their parents. “We are excited to be able to provide not only snacks, but summer meals through this partnership,” said Michele Chivore, director of the Child Nutrition Program at the Atlanta Community Food Bank. “Research shows children who don’t have to worry about food perform better in the classroom, but for those facing food insecurity, the summer months pose an additional challenge. Our hope is that by offering nutritious meals, we can ensure many children aren't starting the school year at a disadvantage.”

Local news media representatives are invited to visit several Book Mobile stops on Friday, July 20.

When school is out, the organization supports summer meal sponsors in 29 counties throughout Metro Atlanta and North Georgia through outreach and marketing campaigns. In 2017, the federally funded Summer Meals Program served 9.4 million meals throughout the state with more than 2,900 summer meal sites. Meals provided through the program are nutritious and meet USDA meal pattern guidelines. Families may text FOOD GA to 877-877 to find summer feeding sites near them.

Gwinnett County Public Schools is Georgia’s largest school district, serving approximately 180,000 students. This is the district’s second summer for its Book Mobile program. For more about the BookMobile go to
