Gwinnett County Public Schools makes Forbes’ “Best Employers for Women” list

July 26, 2018

Georgia’s largest school district is the best employer for women in the state of Georgia and one of the best in the nation according to Forbes Magazine. Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) ranks 10th on the Forbes list of Best Employers for Women 2018. GCPS is one of only four school districts, and the highest ranked one, to make the list of 300 employers. With nearly 23,000 employees, 78% of which are women, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is the largest employer in Gwinnett County and one of the largest employers in Georgia.

Forbes partnered with market research company Statista for its first-ever ranking of America’s best employers for women. In an article about the process used to determine the ranking Forbes reported:

“Statista surveyed 40,000 Americans, including 25,000 women, working for businesses with at least 1,000 employees. All the surveys were anonymous, allowing participants to openly share their opinions. Respondents were first asked to rate their organizations on criteria such as working conditions, diversity and how likely they’d be to recommend their employer to others. These responses were reviewed for potential gender gaps. So if women, for example, rated an organization poorly on diversity, but men rated it highly, Statista would take that into account and adjust the company’s score accordingly. Statista then asked female respondents to rate their employers on factors such as parental leave, discrimination and pay equity. These respondents were also asked to nominate organizations in industries outside their own. The final list ranks the 300 employers that both received the most recommendations and boast the most gender diverse boards and executive ranks.”

Principal Financial Group of Des Moines, Iowa, an investment management and insurance firm, earned the top spot on the Forbes list. At number 10, GCPS came in one spot after Harvard University (9), but before several noteworthy companies like Quicken Loans (13) and Google (17). The ranking comes just three months after GCPS made Forbes’ “Best Employers list”.

“We are very pleased that for the second time since May that Forbes and Statista have recognized Gwinnett County Public Schools as a top employer,” said Dr. Linda Anderson, GCPS associate superintendent for Human Resources and Talent Management, “This latest recognition as a 2018 Best Employer for Women is notable as women make up the majority of our workforce. The 300 employers who make up this list are impressive and we are quite proud that our school district came in at #10. To know that those who responded ranked GCPS so highly when it comes to working conditions, diversity, equity, and the other criteria is wonderful... it is what we focus on day in and day out as we strive to be an employer of choice."
