Students who visit one of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) Book Mobiles will soon have more selections to choose from. KW (Keller Williams) Commercial Atlanta Partners and Kares 4 Kids have teamed up to donate nearly 700 new Scholastic books to the GCPS Book Mobiles. New books are given away during the school year when one of the book mobiles is “booked” by a GCPS school. Some schools use the event as a reading incentive for students.
Jan Wilson, GCPS coordinator of Media Instruction, is excited about what the donation will mean for the Book Mobile program. “The opportunity to partner with the Keller Williams Realty offices in Gwinnett is a great example of the relationships that we try to establish with our community,” Ms. Wilson said. “The Kares 4 Kids Foundation’s mission to serve children fits perfectly with our goals for the GCPS Book Mobiles. Receiving nearly 700 books was a surprise since we did not know how many to expect.”
During the summer, the Book Mobiles visit neighborhoods in clusters where children may not have access to books or to a public library. Students can check out books each week and they receive a brand new book at the end of July as a reward for reading during the summer. The two bookmobiles are stocked with more than 4,000 books for all ages and reading levels. Although they are in use year round, the Book Mobiles are most active during the school year when they visit schools to promote reading and reward students.
“We have six Book Mobile events in the next two weeks and the Kares 4 Kids book donations will be on the Book Mobiles as part of the collection. The donated books included fiction and nonfiction titles from which students may select. We love offering a variety of titles so that students find that ‘just right’ book and hopefully begin building personal libraries,” Ms. Wilson said.
