GCPS students top state, nation on ACT

Gwinnett ACT scores continue to outpace state and nation

October 18, 2018

Gwinnett students continue to outperform their peers in the state and across the nation on the ACT Assessment, based on the scores released today. Gwinnett’s scores matched last year’s scores, remaining at a five-year high. The ACT test assesses high school students’ general educational development and their ability to successfully complete college-level work. The four skill areas that are covered with multiple choice tests are:  English, mathematics, reading, and science. An optional writing test measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.

In Gwinnett, last year’s test-takers posted an average composite score of 22.6 out of a possible 36, compared to 21.4 for the state and 20.8 for the nation. In addition, Gwinnett students continue to outperform the state and nation in English, reading, science, and mathematics. This past year 4,722 GCPS students took the test.

A review of local school results show that nine Gwinnett schools increased their average composite scores from 2016-17 to 2017-18. Those high schools are: Dacula; Discovery; Grayson; Gwinnett Online Campus; Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology; Meadowcreek; Norcross; Parkview; and Peachtree Ridge. In addition, ACT scores at two other Gwinnett high schools— Duluth and Lanier— remained unchanged.

Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instructional Support Dr. Jonathan Patterson says, “The ACT is based on what students learn in high school and provides personalized information about their strengths for education and career planning. The learning that takes place every day in the classroom and our pursuit of excellence in academic knowledge, skills, and behavior for each student helps us to better prepare our students for college and careers. Our students continue to outperform their peers from around the state and nation on college entrance exams like the ACT, providing them with an advantage when it comes to the college admissions process.”

The ACT is a test used by colleges and universities to predict how well students will perform at the post-secondary level. Students are encouraged to take the ACT as well as the SAT college admission exam to provide a broad range of information for college admissions counselors.
