Lilburn Elementary School and Osborne Middle School earned 1st place honors at recent FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics competitions. The contests involve teams of children, ages 9 to 14, who design their own solution to current scientific problems, then build LEGO® robots that perform autonomous ‘missions.’
On January 27, 2018, the Osborne Middle School BucketHeads won the State Championship at the Georgia Tech site. This is their second championship in three years. The team includes Alicia Ayala, Alexandria Burkingstock, Kathryn Clark, Nathan Clark, Noah Cunningham, Karson Hildreth, Ryleigh Jenkins, and Joseph Mobley.
On February 3, 2018, the Lilburn Elementary School Leg-O-Matics, Gianna Chambry, Michelle Diep, Jaden Ha, Mina Lee, Faith Mwangala, Lucas Niemi, Juan Ramos-Pena, Nevaeh Sullivan, Vinci Tu, and Shamira Villarreal-Gutierrez, won their first State Championship at the Georgia Gwinnett College competition.
Both teams will advance to represent GCPS and Georgia at the FLL World Championship in April in Houston, Texas.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. The not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills. FIRST participation is proven to encourage students to pursue education and careers in STEM-related fields, inspire them to become leaders and innovators, and enhance their 21st century work-life skills.
FLL Robotics participation in Georgia is so great that the state actually holds two state competitions. Traditionally, each year one of those state competitions is allowed to send a representative or bid to one of the World Competitions (there are two World Competitions, one in St. Louis and a new venue in Houston to make space for all the countries and states to have representation). At the World Championship the teams will work with another country, making this truly an international event and experience for the students. It is much like the Robotics Olympics where students from around the world share research, ideas, and a passion for robotic engineering.
