Three Gwinnett County Public Schools students advance to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair after winning Grand Prize honors at the Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair. Arnav Jain will be joined by sisters Vicky and Gloria Ham at the competition which will be held in Arizona in May.

Jain, an 11th grade student at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, developed and programmed the Intelligent Medical Stapler. The prototype uses machine learning to recognize a model of skin and executes medical grade staples to suture wounds. The project’s goal is to improve accuracy, prevent scarring, and reduce infection rates following surgical procedures requiring staples to close wounds.

The Ham sisters’ project, Alternative Tessellation and Intercone Design for Helmets, addresses the need for optimum level bike helmet protection for the niche of bike vending and rentals. The design, developed and tested by Peachtree Ridge High School students, is made of sustainable paper-based materials. Their prototype is more cost effective than traditional plastic helmets without sacrificing protection. When tested, prototypes of the tessellation and intercone patterns perform similar in tensile strength to current helmets on the market. Furthermore, the unique design offers potential for the helmet to be foldable, which would allow riders who use bike services to commute to work and store the helmet with greater ease in a briefcase or backpack.

The Ham sisters were awarded $750 in seed money to grow their business after winning the “shark tank” style competition at the Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair.
