Readers Rally teams set to compete at Berkmar HS

Berkmar High, the site of 2018 Readers Rally

March 14, 2018

On Saturday, March 17, Berkmar High School will host the 2018 Gwinnett Readers Rally, one of the largest reading events in Gwinnett Country. Nearly 100 schools, representing every level and cluster, are participating in this year’s event. The opening ceremonies for elementary and middle schools begins at 9 a.m. and 9:45 a.m., respectively. The high school competition begins at 10 a.m.

To prepare for this competition, students spend an average of eight months reading 15 books that represent the very best of modern children’s literature. High school teams read selected titles from the Georgia Peach Award for Teen Readers nominees. Elementary and middle schools read a list of 15 books selected by a committee of Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) media specialists, teachers, and parents.

Rally teams proudly represent their schools as they go head-to-head against other schools in their division, answering questions about the Rally books in a quiz-bowl style format. Winning teams in each division compete in a division championship televised by GCPS TV.

More than 1,200 people are expected to attend the Rally event. Such a massive endeavor would not be possible without the help of hundreds of GCPS employees, community members, parents, and high school students who generously donate their Saturday mornings to make this a fun and rewarding experience for all the teams.
