August 28, 2018

Skye A. Williams, a senior at South Gwinnett High School, was selected to attend four summer leadership Image of Skye Williams in a glider and at an outdoor eventseminars offered by the United States Military Service Academies. Williams was among a select group to attend West Point’s Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) in June. More than 7,000 juniors nationwide applied to SLE, which offers outstanding high school juniors the opportunity to experience life at West Point. Williams also participated in the 2018 Naval Academy Summer Seminar which introduced her to life at the academy, where she experienced first-class academic, athletic, and professional training.

Because of her hard work and dedication, Williams was also selected to participate in the Summer Seminar at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) on a “whole person concept.” The USAFA Summer Seminar looks for emerging leaders to take the Air Force into the future, and they look for that leadership based on demonstrated leadership experience or potential in extracurricular and community activities, athletics and academics.

“My experience at the Air Force Academy was truly exciting,” said Williams. “I got a chance to fly a glider and that was really an experience that I will never forget.”

Williams’s summer experience didn’t stop there, she also was awarded a full scholarship to attend the 2018 Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) Program through the United States Coast Guard. As an AIM participant, she was introduced to all aspects of Coast Guard Academy cadet life, with an emphasis on the rigor of an Academy Freshman Summer experience.

“Cadet Williams is the leader of the JROTC at South Gwinnett High School because she has shown a strong vision and the willingness to see it through,” said Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Flegler Jr., the school’s senior Army instructor for the JROTC Program. “She believes in mission accomplishment and worked very hard this summer to accomplish her mission of attending each service academy’s summer leadership seminars.”

The Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a program offered to high schools that teach students character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, and diversity.
