Discovery High student makes his mark on
national stage

Ryan Lewis, a Discovery High School student, earned 2nd place at the 2017 National August Wilson Monologue Competition in New York after finishing 2nd in the state competition. Congratulations to this talented thespian!

    New leaders announced 
    At its April Board Meeting, the Gwinnett Board of Education appointed the following leaders for 2017-18:
  • Shane Orr - Principal, Central Gwinnett High School
  • Kara Dutton - Principal, Jackson Elementary School
    FY2018 budget hearings set
    for May 11 and May 18

    The Gwinnett County Board of Education will hold public budget hearings on the FY2018 budget on May 11 and May 18. Both hearings will be held in the Board Room in the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center, located in Suwanee. On May 11, the hearing starts at 7 p.m., and on May 18, the hearing begins at 6 p.m., before the May Board Meeting. The School Board is expected to adopt the final budget and a tentative millage rate at its regular meeting on May 18. The millage rate will be finalized in June.

    Books on Board!
    An exciting new literacy-initiative-on-wheels is rolling into Gwinnett soon. You're invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new GCPS Book Mobile! The event is set for Sat., May 13, at 12:30 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Mall of Georgia. The ribbon-cutting is part of a fun-filled weekend at the Barnes & Noble location in Buford, including performances by school groups (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and tours of the Book Mobile (noon to 2:30 p.m.) on Saturday. In addition, a percentage of all purchases at the three Barnes & Noble locations in Gwinnett (Buford, Norcross, and Snellville) on May 13 and 14 will be donated to buy books for the Book Mobile. You also can support the Book Mobile through online purchases at bn.com/bookfairs from May 13 to May 19. (Use Bookfair ID 12128344 at checkout.) This summer, the Book Mobile will travel a 35-stop route in the Meadowcreek Cluster each week, checking out school library books to students who may not have easy access to the public library. Watch for details on the summer schedule in coming weeks.
    Deadline approaches for dual-language program
    May 11 at 4 p.m. is the registration deadline for families of rising kindergartners who are interested in GCPS' dual language immersion (DLI) program. DLI is offered at six Gwinnett elementaries-- Spanish at 
    Annistown, Baldwin, Bethesda, Camp Creek, and Ivy Creek elementary schools and French at Trip Elementary School. The program builds by one grade level every year, through high school. DLI schools will accept transfers if available slots are not filled by students in the school zone and families provide transportation.

    summer learning opportunities
    Girl reading in the park High school students can register now for summer school to make up a class or get ahead. (Rising 9th graders can take Health and PE classes.) 
  • May 24 is the deadline to register for summer classes through Gwinnett Online Campus. Classes run June 5-30.
  • June 1 is the deadline to register for face-to-face summer classes that will be offered at four locations--Central Gwinnett, Meadowcreek, Mill Creek, and Shiloh high schools-- from June 13 to July 11 (No classes will be held June 16, June 23, June 30, and July 4.) 
  • Language Arts resource review 
    runs through May 12 
    The public is invited to take part in a review of Language Arts instructional resources which are under consideration for our middle schools. The resources are available Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center, through May 12
    GCPS accepting applications
    for GEMS Oversight Committee
    Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is inviting parents, community members, and school district employees to apply for the GEMS Oversight Committee, a group of community and school system representatives charged with the annual review of the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 2, 2017. After the review, the committee recommends revisions and additions to CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks for adoption by the Gwinnett County Board of Education. Committee members serve three-year terms. Completed applications should be returned by Aug. 25, 2017, to the attention of Jadd Jarusinski, director of Instructional Resources and Support, at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center.

    If you're a sports fan and want to help support students, teachers, and school programs through the Gwinnett Foundation Fund, Inc., mark your calendar for the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame event on May 19. You won't want to miss the event's keynote speaker, Atlanta Falcons Head Coach
    Dan Quinn, and the induction ceremony for the Class of 2017-
    Courtney Puckett Oro (Providence Christian Academy, gymnastics),
    Tony Akins (Berkmar HS, basketball), Coach Jack Britt (the old Grayson and Lawrenceville high schools), Kyle Maynard (Collins Hill HS, wrestling), and Chad Hall (Wesleyan School, football). All proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships benefit the Foundation's student scholarship fund.
    GCPS now hiring drivers 
    GCPS is now accepting applications for school bus drivers! The hourly wage for drivers is competitive, and bus drivers have excellent benefits and paid training as well as summer vacation and holidays off. Qualifying candidates can earn credit for past commercial driving experience (CDL). Applicants are required to hold a good driving record and a high school diploma or GED.   • The Gwinnett County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thurs., May 18, at 7 p.m., at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center.
  • May 22-24 are early-release days for high school students taking final exams.
  • Gwinnett seniors will participate in graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2017 from May 22 through May 29
  • The last day of the school year is Wed., May 24.
