    2017 TOTY: Introducing...
    Jamie Lynn McFarland!
    An elementary teacher who says teaching students with severe and profound intellectual disabilities is her "calling" has been named the 2017 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year (TOTY)! Learn more about Jamie Lynn McFarland of Rock Springs Elementary School, who also was named the district's Elementary School TOTY.
    Luke Smith of Norcross High School and Alex Robson of GIVE Center West were honored as the High School and Middle School TOTYs, respectively.
    New leaders announced
    At its November Board Meeting, the Gwinnett Board of Education appointed the following leaders:
  • Dr. Linda Anderson - Associate Superintendent of Human Resources and Talent Management
  • Melissa Madsen - Principal, Britt Elementary School
  • Lisa Rhodes - Principal, Pharr Elementary School
  • Tyese Scott - Principal, McKendree Elementary School
  • Registration reminders for charters, 
    other schools, and programs
    The school district's charter schools and other special schools and programs have scheduled information sessions and registration dates for students interested in attending one of the schools in the 2017-18 school year:
    • Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC): Full-time registration is February 1-28 for students in grades 4-12 interested in attending GOC for 2017-18. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration process is not complete until all required documents are presented to the school office. Interested families are encouraged to attend an open house and tour at the school's campus from 10 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 31, Feb. 1, Feb. 2, Feb. 14, Feb. 15, or Feb. 16.  An informational meeting is set for Feb. 28, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., or check out informational videos online.
    • Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST): Registration is open through Jan. 20. Remaining information sessions for rising 9th graders and their families are set for Dec. 13 and Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. at the school. The registration lottery will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 30 at the J.Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center. The school will accept 375 students for its 2017-18 freshman class.
    • Grayson HS Technical Education Program: Online registration opens Jan. 9, with the Winter Open House set for Jan. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. (Students can apply from any GCPS computer, and must be in the GCPS network to apply.) Information visits will be held at GCPS high schools between Jan. 9 and Feb. 2.
    • Maxwell High School of Technology: Registration for the 2017-18 school year begins Jan. 9, with an Open House set for Feb. 2, between 5 and 7 p.m. at the school. Information visits will be held at GCPS high schools between Jan. 9 and Feb. 2.
    • New Life Academy of Excellence: The window for re-enrollment for current students runs through Jan. 31. Open enrollment for new students is set for Jan. 9-31. School tours are available on Jan. 4. Sign up for a tour online. If needed, a registration lottery will be held on Feb. 20.
    • North Metro Academy of Performing Arts: School tours are available monthly-- Dec. 14, Jan. 11, Feb. 8, March 8, April 12, and May 10-- with an informational meeting planned for the spring. Watch for registration and meeting dates.

    Community members serve as

    During American Education Week (
    Nov. 14-18), 138 members of Gwinnett's business community served as "Principal for a Day" in local schools. The annual event, co-sponsored by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and GCPS, gives community stakeholders and business owners the opportunity to visit learning communities and see The Promise of Gwinnett in action!

    Be prepared for winter weather that could affect Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). Parents and community members can access information about the system's winter weather procedures on the GCPS website. 
    What's new in the online Communiqué?
    Communiqué is the district's digital magazine, sporting new content every day or two. Recent and upcoming posts include 'promising' student writers, volunteering with the JA Discovery Center in Gwinnett, school activities, and more.

  • The Gwinnett County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on 
    Thurs., Dec. 15, at 
  • Early release days for high school students' final exams are scheduled for Dec. 19-21.
  • Winter Break for students is set for Thurs., Dec. 22, through Wed., Jan. 4. Students return to school on Thurs., Jan. 5.
  • All GCPS schools and offices will be closed on Mon., Jan. 16, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
