GCPS honors students with inaugural Promise of Gwinnett Caring Award

Three GCPS students earn inaugural Caring Award

GCPS honors students with inaugural Promise of Gwinnett Caring Award

February 8, 2017

As part of National School Counseling Week, celebrated this year Feb. 6-10, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) launched a new award that specifically honors students who demonstrate exceptional character, a strong record of community service, and who regularly display care for their peers and adults within their school communities. In this inaugural year of the award, Gwinnett County Public Schools selected three students to receive The Promise of Gwinnett Caring Award. These students were nominated by counselors at their respective schools and selected by a district level committee. This year’s winners are:

  • Jessica Elizabeth Stanhouse, a 5th grader at Arcado Elementary School

  • Ashley Paige Richardson, an 8th grade student at Couch Middle School

  • Michelle Derewitz, a 12th grade student at Lanier High School

Dianne Thompson, director of Advisement and Counseling, says the idea for this award came from a GCPS counselor who received such an award when he was a student. She explains, “This award speaks to the promise found in our students and to the good things many of them are doing today to make our schools and their communities better. Different from many awards that recognize students based on their GPA or class standing… this award recognizes students who are known for being kind and for caring about their community and others. By developing and nurturing caring and ethical behavior in our students we help to prepare young people to be successful citizens… we help them to become The Promise of Gwinnett!”
