Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) Community-Based Mentoring Program received a $25,000 grant from The Primerica Foundation to expand the successful boys mentoring program to include a girls mentoring option.

Studies show that successful mentoring programs help students develop social skills, improve school achievement and graduation rates, as well as build character. GCPS proactively developed a Community-Based Mentoring program to connect caring adults in the community with students in grades 4 through 12. The mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and support, helping mentees become successful young adults, both in and out of school. Every year mentors interact and support more than 500 students from across the district.

“The addition of a Primerica Foundation grant, coupled with support from the Gwinnett County Board of Education and Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks, ensures that in January 2018, the girls mentoring program will be able to hit the ground running,” said Dr. James Rayford, director of the Community-Based Mentoring Program. Joining Dr. Rayford and leading the effort to create the mentoring program for Gwinnett girls will be former GCPS principal Janice Warren.
