Five members of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) Class of 2018 have been recognized as recipients of the 2018 Young Leaders Scholarship, successfully turning their work in the classroom and community into cash for college. Bailey Curtis of Mill Creek High School; Hannah Roebuck of Parkview High School; Maggie Grace YanYan Simmons of Grayson High School; Shannon Davis of Peachtree Ridge High School; and Reina Mitchom of Archer High School are this year’s honorees. Each graduate will receive a $2,000 scholarship thanks to Georgia United Credit Union (GUCU) and the Mitsubishi Electric Classic who combined forces to donate $10,000 to the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation.
Sponsored by the Executive Women’s Day Forum of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, Georgia United Credit Union, and the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation, the Young Leaders Scholarship recognizes female GCPS graduates who distinguished themselves as community volunteers, entrepreneurs, or school leaders. Since 2014, 17 Gwinnett graduates have received the scholarships, advancing to colleges such as the University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Columbia University, University of Chicago, Clemson University, Brigham Young University, and the University of Miami.
“Georgia United takes great pride in being an active and responsible member of the communities we serve and believe giving back is not only the right way, but the only way,” said Kim Wall, director of Business & Community Development, Georgia United Credit Union. “As a business partner in education, we want to empower students to become successful, productive citizens, enrich lives and advance financial literacy.”
Monte Ortel, who serves as the Mitsubishi Electric Classic tournament director, says the Classic is proud of the work it’s done over the years. “The Mitsubishi Electric Classic is honored to support the Young Leaders Scholarship program through our Executive Women’s Day Forum,” Ortel said. “Since its inception in 2013, the Mitsubishi Electric Classic has donated more than $2 million in support of charitable organizations in Gwinnett County and the greater metro Atlanta area.”
