Clinics and Student Health

The following steps are being taken to serve students in our school clinics:

  • Students who become sick with COVID-19 symptoms while at school will be sent to the clinic. They will be isolated in a separate area from other students who are in the clinic for routine reasons (e.g., medication, first aid, or other regular treatments). Students who are sick must be picked up promptly and are subject to the Return to School Guidelines (in this document on page 4).
  • Students and staff who become ill are encouraged to seek treatment and consultation with their personal healthcare provider or the local health department. If warranted, a COVID-19 test also is recommended. Parents must communicate immediately with the school if their child has tested positive or been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Staff members who test positive or have been in close contact with someone who tested positive must tell their supervisor.
  • When cases of COVID-19 are confirmed, either in students or staff, the school system will work with local health authorities to respond rapidly as dictated by the nature of each case.

    - In most cases, this includes quarantine of the individual and self-isolation of identified close contacts, up to an entire classroom as well as those who ride the bus with the individual.
    - The school will notify parents if their student needs to self-isolate due to being in close contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19.
    - When communicating about a case, Gwinnett County Public Schools will follow all relevant student health privacy laws, and ill individuals will not be identified by name.
    - Students who are quarantined due to positive COVID-19 tests, or classes that are self-isolated due to exposure, will be able to continue instruction through digital learning

  • Clinic staff will wear personal protective equipment, changing as needed between students.
  • Touchless thermometers will be used in schools when taking student or staff temperatures.
